We are now leaving Frankfurt, Germany next stop Bern, Switzerland.
This is basically two posts crammed in one. I can see the river from the front door of my hostel so I am a little distracted.
All in all Frankfurt was an okay city, it never really left me in awe of the sights and it’s people. The Römerberg cathedral was about the only really neat thing to see there, it is one of the only buildings to survive an Allied bombing of the city of Frankfurt in 1944. I found the city smelled too. It smelled like stagnant water or like a septic field if you can understand what I mean.
Yesterday we left Frankfurt to come here to Bern, Switzerland, and I have to say deciding to come here was one of the best decisions we’ve made so far.
But first let me tell you about our glorious train ride.
So yesterday we climb aboard our train bound for Basil and get ourselves one of those six passenger rooms in second class. Eventually the other two guys sharing the room with us get off at their respective stops leaving us to ourselves. No sooner do they leave does Border Patrol show up and rip apart Rowan’s bags and interrogate him on why he has two passports. (He has British citizenship too) Eventually we get it sorted out they stamp my passport, and they go on their merry way. Eventually we get to Basil where apparently we were supposed to switch trains, but upon arrival we see that our train actually goes to Bern.
Now we are in the home of Einstein and the Swiss Army Knife.
From the moment we stepped off the train into the streets of Bern I’ve been captivated by this city. The history, the views, the river, the girls, and the brown bears. Let’s just say WOW! It really reminds me of Canada with it’s clean air, mountains, clean water, and natural beauty.
So after we checked out the city for a while we came back to our hostel room to find out we are bunked up with these two Scottish guys Ian and Grant, who were a fucking riot. We all end up drinking beer until one in the morning, even though they had to get up and catch a train early this morning. And man was it crappy Swiss beer. Tonight we buy beer at the super market.
