So this post is a little late. Since I got home from Vancouver last Sunday I've been sick and packing boxes for the big move.

So last weekend I headed over to Vancouver to see one of my long time favourite bands Spirit of the West.

It was two fun nights of being with friends and like minded people. Darryl and his girlfriend Caity joined me for the first night at the Commodore. Later that evening our table was crashed by an Irish guy and his buddy from Chemanius who end up buying a few rounds for the table. Jagerbombs! They remind me of a night after Oktoberfest in Munich when we drank a shitload of them then caught a train the next morning back to Prague when I felt like dying.

Night two I met up with Shayne and grabbed some Crepes and a drink. Mine was a coke his a beer. Weird. Then it was off to the Commodore for more Spirit. The show was great and during an encore the performed "The Crawl" with Barney Bentall and Ashley MacIsaac.

Both shows easily made it into my Top Ten Concerts list. But more about that later.

Photos can be seen on my flickr page.

I just finished watching Into The Wild and I have to say Sean Penn did a good job. I found the movie very reminiscent of the old Spaghetti Westerns of the last decade. Long drawn shots and lots of silence to show you how stark, barren, and lonely the land really is.

It is hard to believe that this actually happened sometimes. I mean when I read the book it made me feel this sense of unattainable adventure that frankly I wanted for myself. In some ways I’d love to do what McCandles did, and just disappear. It is the destroying everything you know and love that would bug me.

It was a good movie about losing, and you don’t see those anymore. It ends in a downer that is true and there is no escape to a happy ending. It is how life is a long unforgiving road of choices that in the end no one truly succeeds because we all die alone.

I know what you are thinking there is a place called Dakar in South America? Well there isn’t (I don’t actually know that).

“Patrice Clerc, President of Amaury Sport Organisation and Etienne Lavigne, Director of the Dakar, have announced that the 2009 Dakar would take place in Argentina and Chile from the 3rd to the 18th of January. They promise an amazing course, a 9000 km loop including 6000 of specials between Buenos Aires, Valparaiso and Buenos Aires. The Dakar rally, the legendary event of the off-road rally discipline, will for the first time go to South America in 2009.”

Offical Dakar Rally Site

I think Darryl and I are going to try to go this year. It is 11 months away, and that means we need to start saving. NOW!

Want to come to let me know and we will try to work something out.

In other news.

I’ve been on some courses for VIH basically all this week and kicking some serious ass. We may be looking for someone to work in the Yard with us because one of the guys just quit. Want a job?

“This crowd seems like only maybe two of them haven’t seen Juno” - Shayne Kaye

Same Song Different Rant

Last night we checked out Immaculate Machine along with Brook and Luke’s side project Rugged Uncle at Logan’s Pub. Great performance by both, but it is always the crowd I don’t like be it the pretentious pricks who at one point called me a sellout for working at the Zone or the stupid bitch who couldn’t dance in one spot.

I mean I’m fine if people want to dance at a show that’s what most of them are there for, but this was to much she was flying around elbows out trying to fly, ass butting anyone in her vicinity, and making it miserable for the people around her. I think by the end she had a ten feet of open space, because people were getting smacked around, nutted, and annoyed.

I just backed off and grabbed another Rayner.

Later on as Immaculate Machine was playing I get a text message from Rozie. *”They won’t let me in.” then I get another one moments later “For Free.” The guys at the door said they were at capacity but if she payed the $10 dollar cover she could come in. Way to think about those fire marshals rules guys. Remember Great White? Eventually she gets in and Shayne, Rozie and I watch the rest of the show.

Why Are We Walking Like This?

So for the last two days I’ve been getting text messages from some kid who obviously thought I was someone else even though I told him he had the wrong person several times. He are some of the highlighted conversations. I’ll be bold he will be italics.

“Hey it’s Eddy. Going to Washington this weekend?”

“Who is this? I think you have the wrong person, and on the other note no I am not going to Washington.”

“Lol, It’s Eddy.”

“Eddy the fuck who? The only Edd I know lives in Devon.”

“Schlagintweit. Edward.”

“This is Tyson Elder.”

“Oh shit I’m Sorry.”

“That’s right you’re sorry. Wasting my time.”

In other news…

Juno was an excellent movie. Almost as good as Rambo but I think they are two completely different types of film. I actually dragged Rozie and Shayne out to Sidney to watch it at the Star instead of me going into town. You know because my transmission is dead.

Speaking of movies, I don’t want to jinx it but I got the green light to use a friends house as a possible for set we’ve been talking about shooting for a while. I’ve had the idea for a long time and it looks good on paper so all I need is some actors, and time. I tell you more as it progresses.

It looks like it’ll be a good read as I enjoy pretty much everything Kevin Smith does. I recently finished reading Anthony Bourdain’s book No Reservations based on some of his adventures around the world for his television show named the same.

I also polished off one of the best books I’ve read in a long time while in Mexico. Smile When You’re Lying: Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer by Chuck Thompson. If you enjoy books about travel and the cynicism of Vonnegut and Hunter S. you will really enjoy this book. I’ll recommend this book to everyone I know because I enjoyed it so much.

On Friday night I went to the movies with Mel, Bob, and Peter to see “There Will Be Blood,” and I’ll never watch it again. It wasn’t that the movie was terrible but it just went on forever without anyone saying anything or doing anything. I would have trimmed this 2 hour and 37 minute movie down to an hour and a half with all the drawn out scenes that deserved to be on the cutting room floor. Granted it is artistic expression for a director but come on man you knew this was to fucking long. Tongiht I’m going to see “Cloverfield” with Logan and Adrian.

Blair Witch + Giant Monsters (must) = Gold

On a side note here one of my favorite annual sporting events has been cancelled for the first time in it’s 30 year history due to recent threats of terrorism in Africa. For those of you who don’t know of the event I’m talking about it is the world famous Dakar Rally a grueling race that takes place from Portugal to Senegal over 14 days. Every year hundreds enter but few finish.

“Now there are rumors that the (French) Foreign Ministry recommendation to cancel the race is nothing more than a cover for the insurance companies; apparently they pulled out and told the organizers they won’t cover the thousands of people here if they’ll be entering high-risk countries,” said Cohen. -ynet news

Proof you can’t trust the French.

I remember last year when Darryl and I headed over to Saltspring Island for a few days everything would stop for about an hour a day when we could get the Dakar update footage on OLN. It was possibly one of my favorite parts about that trip other then eating good food, drinking good wine, and being somewhere I’d never been before. But this race represents so much to me/us on the strength of the human spirit and body in some of the worlds harshest environments and situations.

I just hope they don’t cancel it again. If so we will probably have to blame the Russians not terrorists or the French.

The other evening Darryl and I headed into Sidney for sushi and he expressed his views on the Russians. “They’re not really bad guys. They were a good enemy, though.”

More informationg on the Dakar cancellation can be found on this little handy link I got from a friend today.

Dakar Rally Cancelled

I’m disappointed that I’ll miss one of my favorite annual sporting events, but not as much as the riders, drivers, crews, organizers, and everyone else involved. Ces’t le vie. I guess.

Well folks if you don’t hear from me for a while it is because I’m basking in the warmth of Mexico. I think I’m going deep sea fishing too(weird for a Vegetarian eh?).

Time for a Siesta.

At 8:15 PM a conversation was noted on the topic of this post.

Darryl says:
What if the terrorists want to cancel the Dakar?

Darryl says:
Maybe terrorists like Nascar.

Tyson Elder says:
No one likes Nascar. If I’ve learned anything from Top Gear it is that fact.

Rozie says:
No intelligent person likes Nascar.

Darryl says:
Well, terrorists aren’t necessarily intelligent.

Darryl says:
Some may be.

Darryl says:
But like that song goes…it doesn’t really take a mastermind to plan a suicide bombing.

Tyson Elder says:
Unlike the Russians who are criminal masterminds.

I’ve also been listening to a lot of CAKE lately.

Christmas was recently around wasn’t it.

I read an interesting article it may be factious at points but none the less is a great thought on the world of Facebook on Matthew Good’s blog.

“Now, you might think that wonderful, that being drugged in your sleep one night only to wake up with a splitting headache on a tropical island surround by the world’s most beautiful women is your idea of heaven, but let me assure you that it is anything but.”

It clicked in sometime this week that Christmas is just around the corner. And I don’t give a shit. It’s a shame I think my attitude is rubbing off on people, and my ranting makes it clear. I know because of this I shot myself in the foot the other day.

I think today is my last day at the Zone. I’m not sure they haven’t told me what I’m doing next week if anything.
