Bound for Mexico

| | Comments (0)

On Sunday my flight to Mexico leaves, and personally I can’t wait. I know it’ll be tough doing the family thing for a week and a bit but you know it’s Mexico.

On a side note here one of my favorite annual sporting events has been cancelled for the first time in it’s 30 year history due to recent threats of terrorism in Africa. For those of you who don’t know of the event I’m talking about it is the world famous Dakar Rally a grueling race that takes place from Portugal to Senegal over 14 days. Every year hundreds enter but few finish.

“Now there are rumors that the (French) Foreign Ministry recommendation to cancel the race is nothing more than a cover for the insurance companies; apparently they pulled out and told the organizers they won’t cover the thousands of people here if they’ll be entering high-risk countries,” said Cohen. -ynet news

Proof you can’t trust the French.

I remember last year when Darryl and I headed over to Saltspring Island for a few days everything would stop for about an hour a day when we could get the Dakar update footage on OLN. It was possibly one of my favorite parts about that trip other then eating good food, drinking good wine, and being somewhere I’d never been before. But this race represents so much to me/us on the strength of the human spirit and body in some of the worlds harshest environments and situations.

I just hope they don’t cancel it again. If so we will probably have to blame the Russians not terrorists or the French.

The other evening Darryl and I headed into Sidney for sushi and he expressed his views on the Russians. “They’re not really bad guys. They were a good enemy, though.”

More informationg on the Dakar cancellation can be found on this little handy link I got from a friend today.

Dakar Rally Cancelled

I’m disappointed that I’ll miss one of my favorite annual sporting events, but not as much as the riders, drivers, crews, organizers, and everyone else involved. Ces’t le vie. I guess.

Well folks if you don’t hear from me for a while it is because I’m basking in the warmth of Mexico. I think I’m going deep sea fishing too(weird for a Vegetarian eh?).

Time for a Siesta.

At 8:15 PM a conversation was noted on the topic of this post.

Darryl says: What if the terrorists want to cancel the Dakar?

Darryl says: Maybe terrorists like Nascar.

Tyson Elder says: No one likes Nascar. If I’ve learned anything from Top Gear it is that fact.

Rozie says: No intelligent person likes Nascar.

Darryl says: Well, terrorists aren’t necessarily intelligent.

Darryl says: Some may be.

Darryl says: But like that song goes…it doesn’t really take a mastermind to plan a suicide bombing.

Tyson Elder says: Unlike the Russians who are criminal masterminds.
